Tiger gymnasts compete at West Central Conference meet, host Section 6A teams

The 2008-09 gymnastics season wrapped up with the conference and section meets.

The Morris Area gymnasts participated in the West Central Conference meet at New London-Spicer on Saturday, Feb. 14.

This varsity only competition required coach Trent Oberg to reduce his squad size to nine athletes. Participating in the meet for Morris Area were Katie Huot, Michelle Jipson, Jessica Daly, Cammi Aanerud, Caroline Fritz, Rachel Moser, Larissa Schmidgall, Hailey Kotts, and Paige Schieler.

"Our hopes were high and goals had been set," said Oberg.

However, Tiger scores were not as high as expected. Oberg said the judges were very particular. With a bigger meet, the judging was tougher than usual.

Huot earned All-Conference honors by placing in the top 15 in the conference.

Huot finished the day with an all-around score of 27.95.

Jipson and Moser earned Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades.

Coach Oberg said it was the most gymnasts that the Tigers have had in the Top 20 of the West Central Conference in one season.

Schmidgall scored a new personal-best on bars with a 6.45. She also had a personal-best score of 7.0 on floor.

Moser stuck her beam routine for a new personal-best score of 7.05.

Schieler recorded a personal-best on floor with a 6.875.

The Tigers hosted the Section 6A Gymnastics Meet on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The section meet is a state meet qualifier from which the top team advances along with the top four individuals in each event.

Oberg said it was the first time the section meet has ever been hosted by Morris Area.

"It was a successful meet," said Oberg. "It ran smoothly and there were lots of positive comments from other schools and parents. We should be proud."

Oberg said he appreciated all the time and extra work from athletes, parents and volunteers. "Thanks for your efforts," commented Oberg. "It could not have been done without you."

Again, this was a varsity-only competition and the team was reduced to nine athletes, the same gymnasts that represented Morris Area at the conference meet the weekend before.

The Tigers competed against nine other teams, some that they had not yet met this season.

The judging was tough as well.

Daly achieved a personal-best score on vault with a 7.9.

Jipson improved her personal-best on vault to 8.4.

Moser scored a personal-best on beam with a 7.425.
