Morris Area defeats Breckenridge 59-32 in Section 6AA West quarterfinals

The No. 1 seed Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta opened the Section 6AA West girls' basketball tournament with a convincing 59-32 win over the Breckenridge Cowgirls.

"Senior captain Stef Strobel came out hitting on all cylinders, knocking down three three pointers as part of her 13-point first half," said coach Ken Gagner.

Junior Nicole Gillespie would take over in the second half scoring 12 of her game-high 15.

"Nicole had the double/double for the night as she also ripped down 10 boards," said Gagner.

Alissa Melberg grabbed seven rebounds.

Heather Gagner led the team in assists with four, in addition to hitting 4-4 from the charity stripe. She had six total points.

Mary Rentz, leading the team in steals with three, was 6-of-8 from the line for all of her points.

Overall the Tigers were 15-of-22 at the line. Breckenridge hit six of 12 attempts.

Also scoring for the Tigers were Kelly Ritter with six, Kelsey Amundson with four, Megan Dierks with three, Erin Schieler with three, Melberg with two, and Jenna Nelson with one.

"We didn't shoot very well as a team, just 33 percent, but we played well enough on the defensive end to make it a comfortable win," said Gagner.

The Cowgirls were shooting at 29 percent.

"Coach Herder of the Cowgirls had his kids ready to play and unfortunately was missing two of his regular girls with sickness and an injury," commented Gagner. "I think we showed a little rust with the nine-day break since the end of the regular season."

There will be little rest for the Tigers now that it's tournament time. The Tigers resume action Saturday at 6 p.m. at the University of Minnesota, Morris against Osakis. The Silverstreaks defeated Staples-Motley Thursday.

Following the Morris versus Osakis game, Minnewaska Area, coming off a 58-53 victory over Benson, takes on West Central Area. The Knights defeated Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thursday.
