UMM women stay undefeated in UMAC

The University of Minnesota, Morris women's basketball team stayed undefeated in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference defeating Crown and Northwestern at home Jan. 23 and 24.

The Cougars took the lead early and never relinquished, taking a 38-18 advantage at half time Friday night.

The Cougars were shooting 36.8 percent in the first half, and improved to 47.1 in the second half.

Crown was shooting at only 29.6 percent overall.

At the free-throw line, the Cougars were 18-of-26 (69.2 percent).

Crown was 55.6 percent at the line, but only made nine free-throws.

All the Cougars notched points in the scoring column, with four reaching double digits.

Steph Roggenbuck and Nikki Washek had 14 points apiece to lead the Cougars.

Roggenbuck also grabbed seven rebounds and led the team with five blocks.

Diane Blommel added 13 points and led in the rebounding column with eight and in the assists with seven.

Jenni Noordmans chipped in 11 points, grabbed six rebounds, and recorded four steals.

Also scoring for the Cougars were Joy Heysse with seven, Kara Norris and Coresa Leighty with six apiece, Natalie Thomas with five, Kaila Lindsey with four, and Lacey Albers and Jamie Rainey with two apiece.

Norris also grabbed six rebounds.

On Saturday, the Cougars trailed by two (34-32) at the break, but bounced back to win 72-61.

The Cougars were shooting at 43.3 percent from the field in the first half, and picked up the pace to 54.2 percent in the second half.

Northwestern was shooting 54.2 percent in the first half, but fell to 23.3-percent shooting in the second half.

At the line, the Cougars were 15-of-21, while the Eagles were 15-of-20.

Leighty dominated with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Roggenbuck had 17 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Rainey had 12 points and five rebounds.

Also scoring were Noordmans and Blommel with seven apiece, and Washek with six.

Washek had a team-high nine assists and Blommel dished out six.
