Cougars win two UMAC matches

The University of Minnesota, Morris volleyball team won two of three Upper Midwest Athletic Conference contests defeating Presentation at home and splitting road matches at St. Scholastica and Northland College.

The Cougars, 8-12 overall and 3-6 in the UMAC, host Martin Luther College Friday at 7 p.m. and Bethany Lutheran College Saturday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played in the PE Center.

After falling behind two sets to none, the Cougars rallied to win the next three sets and earn a 3-2 UMAC home win on Oct. 15. Game scores were 21-25, 25-27, 25-22, 25-16, and 15-8.

Sophomore Sam Pfannenstein had a season high 50 set assists, along with 14 digs.

Senior Alison Pippo added a season- and career-high 23 kills to lead the Cougars.

Briana Czer recorded a double double with 13 kills and 23 digs. She also had two ace serves.

Natalie Hermes also had a double double with 15 kills and 12 digs. She also recorded three ace serves.

Colleen Hermes, the Cougar libero, recorded 27 digs.

Kacy Aasen and Casey Stott had 11 digs apiece.

Shannon Bosek made four ace blocks for the Cougars.

St. Scholastica 3

UM-Morris 0

On Friday the Cougars fell to St. Scholastica in three by scores of 25-14, 25-16, and 25-12.

Hermes led in the dig column with 16.

Pfannenstien had 18 set assists.

Pippo had eight kills and Thomas had eight digs.

Lacey Albers had two ace serves and two ace blocks.

Northland 2

For the second time this season, the Cougars came away with a 3-2 win over Northland College, when the two conference rivals met Saturday in Ashland, Wis.

On Oct. 3, UMM rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Lumberjills 3-2.

Saturday, the Cougars won set number one 25-22. Northland won two straight by scores of 25-20 and 25-11 to take a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars responded with a 25-14 win in the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding game.

In the fifth set, the Cougars out hit the Jills to pick up the 20-18 road win.

Pfannenstein had 45 set assists in the match for UMM. She also recorded two ace serves and three ace blocks.

Czer had a double double with 14 kills and 15 digs.

Pippo also had 14 kills.

Hermes added 16 digs and four ace serves.

Bosek had three ace blocks.
