Morris Legion breaks losing streak with win over Clinton

The Morris Legion baseball team is now 7-8 overall and 6-3 in District 7 after breaking a losing streak with a 6-4 win over Clinton Thursday.

This weekend the Morris American Legion will be hosting an eight-team tournament with games at both Chizek Field and the Babe Ruth Field. The tournament continues all day Saturday and four games are scheduled on Sunday.

Morris traveled to Wheaton June 30, where the Bandits came from behind to win 6-3.

Morris took an early lead with three runs in the first inning.

Wheaton tied it up in the third and added three more runs for the win.

Chokio 13

Morris 3

Drew Schmidgall's three-run double highlighted a four-run first inning as Chokio downed Morris 13-3 Monday night.

Chokio pounded out 14 hits as eight different players had at least one hit and all nine starters reached base and scored at least one run.

Schmidgall and Luke Claassen each had three hits and Claassen drove in two runs. Mitch Daly and Sam Knudson hit home runs to help Chokio.

Dustin Sauter and Kirby Sayles had two hits each for Morris. Sayles, Matt Wohlers, and Darrick Henrichs each drove in a run.

Clinton 4

Morris scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to come from behind for a 6-4 win over Clinton in Legion baseball Thursday night in Clinton.

Post 29 scored three runs in the first. Tyler Evink and Tallack Dosdall had run-scoring singles and one run scored on an error.

Clinton came back and scored two in the fourth and two in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh.

With one out, Mike Siegel, Wohlers and Sayles strung together three straight hits to load the bases. After a strike out, Nate Gades hit what appeared to be a routine, game-ending fly ball to left. But when the ball popped out of the fielder's glove, Siegel and Wohlers scored to give Morris a 5-4 lead. Dosdall followed with a RBI single to end the scoring.

Sayles got the win going six innings allowing seven hits, four runs; three earned with a walk and seven strikeouts. Tony Schultz pitched a perfect seventh for the save.
