Morris VFW team remains undefeated

The Morris VFW baseball team defeated New London 12-8 Tuesday, June 24 to remain undefeated in district play. The game was played in Spicer.

Post 5039 jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on singles by Alex Erickson and Tyler Hansen, walks to Ryan Beyer and Brady Valnes, and a double by Jon Jallo.

New London came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning off of Morris starting pitcher Erickson.

Post 5039 answered with three more in the second on walks to Mitch Kill and Ethan Bruer, and singles by Tanner Berning and Hansen.

Morris added to its lead in the third when Nate Gibson was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Kill. Kill then scored on a New London error.

New London got another run in the third inning and Travis Rinkenberger replaced Erickson to start the fourth.

Morris increased the lead to 12-3 with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Hansen was walked to start the fourth and scored on a Beyer double. Beyer then scored on a pair of ground outs. Ethan Bruer had a double and Rinkenberger a triple in the fifth.

New London scored a run in the sixth. They made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh scoring four runs to draw to within 12-8 and they had the bases loaded. Hansen then relieved Rinkenberger and got the final out on a pop-up to end the game.

Rinkenberger was credited with the win and Hansen recorded the save.

The second game of the night ended in a 4-4 tie. Kill pitched all four innings for Post 5039, giving up three hits, two walks, and striking out three.

Offensively, Kill reached base twice on errors and scored both times. Berning singled and scored twice. Bruer, Cole Riley, and Rinkenberger all drove in runs in the game.
