65 Years Ago Items from the Tribune of August 12, 1949

The water pageant was held last Sunday at the beach in the Pomme de Terre recreational reserve.  The pageant was given by youngsters from Morris, Chokio and Alberta who had taken part in the annual swim schools sponsored by the Red Cross.  There was a large crowd that was on hand to watch the pageant.

Morris Royalty beamed smiles and waved with a flair on behalf of their community in the big annual Glenwood Waterama Parade last Sunday. Wearing white attire was Miss Morris Dawn Meyer. Princess Julie Erickson and Princess Stacy Peterson. The threesome will be succeeded shortly by the new royalty which was crowned as part of the recent Morris Prairie Pioneer Days. Successors in the role are Stacey Mohr and Joy Braun.

Rex Hein, who began his duties as the new Morris Area High School principal on Tuesday came to this state 11 years ago because throughout his course work in education he kept seeing the name of Minnesota linked with high status in education.

This week marks the grand opening for Willie's Super Valu, as a name change marks the end of a 35-year era. Paul Martin said “the name is changing but it's still Willie's. It will be the same service with a smile it's always been.”

The ethanol plant that will be built at the former Roart building in Morris will employ 15 to 20 people. According to Edward N. Mills, president of the “Milsolv” Companies that will operate the Morris Ag Energy Company, all the employees except a technical person to manage the plant will be local people. If the plant grows as it is expected to, Mills said the number of people employed there could be up to 30 eventually, but he said this will not be a big operation.

Kyle Bruer of Alberta received a bachelor of arts degree in business administration and financial management at the College of St. Thomas spring commencement exercises.   

Margaret Payne of Morris has been selected to complete the remaining two years of a three-year term on the Lake Region Arts Council representing Stevens County. Payne majored in communications with an emphasis in radio and television and a minor in theatre at New Mexico University.  She has designed costumes and scenery for the University of Minnesota, Morris Theatre Program and for the Prairie Wind Players of Barrett.

The Morris VFW Baseball team is state tournament bound for the second year in a row. Morris captured the District 5 title with a 6-2 win over Alexandria in the second championship game on Monday night. Alexandria handed Morris their first loss in the double-elimination tournament in the first championship game to force the second and deciding game.
