Highway 29 detour between Benson, Highway 40 begins July 28

Motorists on Highway 29 between Benson and Highway 40 will encounter a detour when a road resurfacing and bridge replacement project begins July 28, weather permitting.

Crews will resurface 11 miles of Highway 29 and replace three bridges.

During the project, Highway 29 will close and motorists will detour to Highway 12, Swift County Road 31/Chippewa County Road 4 and Highway 40.

Only residents who live within the road closure or motorists whose destination falls within the closure will be allowed to use Highway 29. The road will not be passable at the bridge replacement sites.

The project will use cold-in-place recycling, which is a longer-term fix than a traditional mill and overlay. Crews will remove the top layer of the pavement. After the top layer is removed, they mill several more inches of existing pavement, mix it with an oil-based solution and replace it right at the construction site. Then a new layer of bituminous is placed over the top. Cold-in-place recycling is meant to reduce the amount of maintenance and repair costs over time.

Central Specialties, Inc., of Alexandria is the prime contractor for the $7 million project. The road work is expected to be complete by mid-October.

The project was originally scheduled to begin in 2015 but was moved up because of the condition of the road. The schedule change will reduce the amount of time and material needed to repair potholes and cracks along this segment Highway of 29.

When the project is complete, motorists will notice a smoother, safer ride along Highway 29. This project helps ensure MnDOT’s transportation system will continue to serve the state for many years.
