Holiday banners help brighten main street

MORRIS – More than 56 individuals and businesses contributed over $32,000 in donations and in-kind contributions to help buy new holiday lights for downtown Morris as part of the Community Pride Project, a collaboration between the Morris Area Chamber of Commerce, the city of Morris and a committee of Stevens County residents.

The new, lighted wreaths were turned on for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 14 in a ceremony before Morris’ Grand Parade of Lights.

Right now, committee members are in the process of choosing images for the second phase of the project, year-round banners that will feature photos of amenities in Stevens County.

Chamber Administrative Director Rhoda Smith said they will be moving into phase three of the project – fundraising for flowers, benches and other amenities for downtown Morris – shortly. The committee also plans to raise money for the ongoing maintenance of all the downtown decorations, with a total goal of about $50,000.

The holiday decorations will be up until the end of the winter when the new banners will be ready to be installed.
