Active farming applications available July 24

Active farming applications will be available in the Stevens County Assessor's Office beginning Monday, July 24. Applications are due by Wednesday, Aug. 9. Applicants need to call the assessor's office at 320-208-6550 to set up an appointment to fill out an application.

Active farming is for property owners who do not live on their land, but they or a qualified relative farms their land. Qualified relatives include a son or daughter, grandson or granddaughter, sibling or parents by blood or through marriage.

Individuals who received active farming in 2016 or have contacted the assessor's office will receive letters in the mail informing them about applying for active farming. Active farming applications need to be completed every year.

Individuals applying for active farming for the first time in 2017 will need to bring a copy of the front page of the Schedule F of the individual that is farming the land, a copy of their 156EZ from the Farm Service Agency Office, and Social Security numbers for the persons owning and farming the land.

To qualify for active farming, the owner and the relative farming the land must be Minnesota residents and live within four townships of the property. The land must be 40 acres in size and not enrolled in easement programs like CRP, WRP, CREP or RIM.

Applications must be filled out in the Stevens County Assessor's office by Aug. 9 or the property will be classified as non-homestead for 2017 payable 2018 taxes.
