Sylvia Hughes

Longtime Anderson resident Sylvia Vivian Hughes, age 70, passed away June 23, 2010 at her home in Anderson, Alaska.

Sylvia was born on October 31, 1939 in Morris to Clara Vivian and Leslie F. Bahr. After graduating Alberta High School in 1957 as class valedictorian she attended St. Cloud University where she received her Bachelor's in Education. She continued her studies at Portland State University where she received her Masters in Education.

She began teaching in Wayzata in 1961 and then began teaching abroad for the American International Schools in both India and Germany, until returning to the United States in 1969. Sylvia returned to Portland to work for Pacific Railroad & ICN labs until deciding to move to Alaska in 1977, and continue her true passion of teaching at Anderson High School. Sylvia retired form Railbelt School District in May of 1997.

Upon retiring she worked for Cyberlink school and was a substitute teacher and tutored throughout the valley. In 1996 she was accepted as a member of the Who's Who Among American Teachers and she was accepted as a member of the National Association of Professional Woman in 2010.

Sylvia enjoyed traveling, gardening, raising chickens and ducks, working on her bed and breakfast, and spending time with her grandchildren. Sylvia was a very proud, strong and independent woman. Her passion for travel and adventure brought her to Alaska where she quickly became a beloved member of the community. She was an inspirational teacher, who went above and beyond for her students. She believed in everyone and her nurturing and influence had a profound impact on many.

Nothing made Sylvia happier than time spent with her family. She was fiercely proud of her own and the highlight of her life was her children and grandchildren.

She had an irrepressible joy for life and she let nothing stand in her way. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, mentor, and friend. Sylvia had a big heart and knew no stranger. It was a privilege to have Sylvia in our lives and she will be deeply missed by everyone whose life she touched.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Vivian Bahr; father, Leslie F. Bahr; brothers, Roger Bahr and Stanley Bahr. She is survived by her daughters, Kelly M Hughes and husband Bill of Palmer, Alaska; Kathleen L. James and husband Eddie of Las Vegas, Nev.; Son, Shawn T. Hughes of Las Vegas, Nev.; and her grandchildren, Chelsea B. James, Devin T. James, Brandi Duffy, Liam Duffy, and Shawn Duffy.

The family would like to thank all our friends and the community for their love, prayers and support through this very difficult time.
