Suzanne Sarlette

Suzanne Kleone Sarlette, age 59, of Muscatine, Iowa, passed away on Oct. 12, 2009 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage caused by a cancerous brain tumor.

Suzanne was born in Morris on Aug. 9, 1950, the daughter of Walter and Florence (Frayseth) Sarlette. Sue was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Morris. She graduated from Morris High School as valedictorian of the class of 1968. As a senior at Morris High School, Sue earned both the Math Award and the Bausch and Lomb Science Award. Sue attended the University of Minnesota, Morris and graduated with High Distinction in 1972, completing a double major in math and physics. She did post-graduate studies in advanced computer technology at St. Olaf College in Northfield and received her Master's Degree in Computer Science from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa.

Sue was employed as a computer programmer /computer specialist for the U.S. Department of Defense, stationed at Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Ill., starting in 1974. She made her home in Davenport, Iowa. Sue married Gerald Pearson on July 15, 1989, and the couple moved to Muscatine at that time. Sue worked at the Arsenal until her retirement in 2000.

Sue's hobbies included knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. She was an avid birdwatcher, a voracious reader, and loved to work challenging "logic" puzzles. Sue liked to listen to a wide variety of music of many genres, including classical, renaissance, jazz, and world music. After their retirement, Sue and husband Gerry traveled the country with their A-Liner camper, visiting state and national parks and monuments, and attending various astronomy club "Star Parties", bird watching events, and A-Liner Club conventions. Sue was a member of the Iowa-Illinois chapter of Mensa, the Quad-Cities Audubon Society, the Iowa City Bird Club, the Popular Astronomy Club (Quad-Cities), and the A-Liner Owner's Club. She created and maintained the membership database for the A-Liner Owner's Club, and served as their national database manager. Sue also often visited area nursing homes where she would read to residents.

Sue is survived by her husband, Gerald Pearson, of Muscatine, Iowa; mother Florence Sarlette of Morris; brother Del (Carlene) Sarlette of Morris; brother Marty (Brenda) Sarlette of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister Carol (Jack) Dutcher of Vallejo, Calif.; and three nephews: Peter and Steven Sarlette of Morris, and Tony Sarlette of Colorado Springs, Colo. She was preceded in death by her father Walt, brother Richard, and nephew Richard Olson.

A memorial service for Suzanne Sarlette will be held at the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Iowa City, Iowa, on Nov. 14, 2009. Interment will be at Summit Cemetery in Morris. Arrangements are with the Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City.
