Power line trips out west of Benson
BENSON -- Benson area residents made do with cold breakfasts this morning when an electric transmission line outside of the community tripped, leaving the community and the neighboring DeGraff and Clontarf areas without power for just over an hour.
A Great River Energy line that delivers power from the west tripped shortly after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, causing the power outage, according to Elliot Nelson, public works director for Benson. He said it wasn't known immediately what caused the line to trip.
The Great River Energy line serves an Otter Tail Power substation that distributes power to the area. Crews were able to restore the tripped line and energize the lines shortly after 8 a.m.
Nelson said Benson was planning to fire up its diesel generators and energize the distribution system in town, but was unable to do so. The city has just completed work on a new substation and today's incident revealed some work that is still needed.
