Norma Marie (Backman) Madsen passed into the arms of her Savior on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011.Norma was born June 4, 1918, in Spring Grove Township, Roberts County, S.D. She was the daughter of Julius and Mary (Jorgensen) Backman. She spoke Dane until she entered school, where she and her siblings learned English.  In later years she enjoyed many phone conversations in Dane with her sister Pearl.

Norma learned to bake and cook at a very young age, and her skills in the kitchen were second nature to her.  She was unmatched in her ability to bake - buns, rolls, cinnamon twists and pies were works of culinary art when they came from her kitchen.

In 1938, Norma met her husband Earl when she went to work for his father, Hans Madsen. Norma's job was to cook and clean for Earl and his younger brother, Bob.

Earl and Norma were married Sept. 21, 1938.  Their devotion to each other during their 65 years of marriage was an inspiration to all who knew them.

Norma and Earl raised seven children on the family farm. Norma always had a large garden, and kept chickens as well.  There was always a container of egg money in the corner cupboard. Nothing pleased her more than having her children and grandchildren come home.  Sunday afternoons were gathering times at the dining room table for a game of cards and visiting, followed by lunch.

Norma entered the Wilmot Care Center in August of 2004, when mobility problems made it impossible for Earl to care for her at home any longer.  Norma was welcomed to her Heavenly Home by her loving husband Earl, sons: Eldred, Gordon, and Delno, daughter, Gladys; grandson, Jeffrey; brother Jens; and sister Marlys.

Grateful for having been blessed with Norma as their mother are: Dorene and husband Jerry Lotzer of Brookings, S.D; Elroy and wife Sandy Madsen of Wilmot, S.D; Mary and husband Glen Weeden of Milbank, S.D; Karen and husband Steve Arnold of Morris; Arlene and husband Joe Reinart of Beardsley; daughter-in-law, Carol Madsen of Sioux Falls, S.D; son-in-law, Gordon Osterloh of Wilmot, S.D.
