Morris VFW wins in 10 over NL-S

Morris VFW continued District 5 tourney action on Friday night at Minnewaska Area with a loss to Alexandria. Then on Saturday, in an elimination game, New London-Spicer took Morris to 10 innings before Morris found a way to score and win the game in the bottom of the tenth, advancing them to Sunday play.

Alexandria 15s 10, Morris 5

Morris VFW fell to Alexandria 15s Friday, July 25 at Minnewaska Area in the second round of District 5 VFW baseball tournament action. Alexandria doubled in runs compared to Morris, taking the win 10-5.

For Alexandria, Micah Christensen, Connor Hammerback, and Jake Drew led at the plate with two hits each. Hannerback and Christensen combined for four runs and three RBI in the win.

Toby Sayles and Phil Messner got two hits each to lead Post 5039. Sayles got a RBI and Messner knocked a double and scored a run. Phil Anderson also had a RBI single in the loss for Morris.

Sean Amundson took the loss on the mound, giving up six runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.

Morris 4, NL-Spicer 3

Morris edged out a 4-3 extra innings victory over New London-Spicer last Saturday in District 5 tournament action at Minnewaska Area.

NL-S jumped out ahead after three innings and held the 3-2 lead throughout the seven innings of regulation play. Morris, getting home advantage of last at bats, tied it up in the bottom of the seventh when Trent Marty came through in the clutch with a single, scoring Phil Messner who reached on a walk.

The next batter was retired via groundout for the third and final out of regulation play, and then the extra innings began.

Both teams held each other scoreless through two extra innings with each team only adding one hit each in the ninth. Then in the 10th, NL-S had a chance to score first because of a Morris error and a hit-by-pitch call, but couldn’t pull out a run as pitcher Toby Sayles retired the next two batters to end the top half of the 10th still tied at 3-3. Morris got the win in the bottom half of the inning, leading off with Brady Jergenson getting hit by a pitch and later scoring after back-to-back-to-back singles by Sayles, Jared Anderson, and Ryan Dietz who was credited the RBI for the game-winning run.

Dietz went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs and a run scored. Sayles and Amundson both added two hits each with Amundson hitting a triple and Sayles scoring a run in the 4-3 win.

Sayles took the win on the mound for Morris VFW, pitching a complete 10-inning game and striking out 13 batters. He allowed just three unearned runs on eight hits and walked three in the victory.
