Morris 18U edges OTC in extra inning

The Morris 18 and Under #1 softball team edged out an 8-7 victory over Ottertail Central in game one of doubleheader action on Tuesday, June 17.

OTC had a four-run first inning to jump out ahead of Morris #1 (Morris Orange) right off the bat, but Morris got right back in the game, scoring three in the bottom half of the inning.

Tracy Meichsner started the hot bats with a hard single up the middle, scoring on a double by Kayla Pring who scored on another double by Abby Daly. Daly then scored on a RBI single by Carlie Zimmel. A groundout ended the first with Morris trailing by one.

OTC stretched its lead to three, scoring two runs on passed balls. That didn’t stop Morris as Sam Henrichs led off with a single and reached second on an overthrow. Morris got things together in two-out rally mode when Henrichs scored on a double to right field by Lexi Mahoney and Carly Maanum reached on a missed tag. Courtney Storck reached on a bunt, knocking in Mahoney. Maanum scored on a passed ball for the third run of the inning to tie the game 6-6.

Each team added a run in the fifth to make the score 7-7. Since time allowed, they played an extra inning where Kayla Pring scored the game-winning run on a Carlie Zimmel hit after reaching on a double to left field.

Other results from Tuesday night action, Morris #1 also won their second game against Montevideo 12-0. Morris #2 lost to Minnewaska 13-3 and OTC 6-2. Morris #1 goes into week three at 2-1-1, recording a tie in first week action against Lac Qui Parle Valley. Morris #2 goes into week three at 2-2.

Next Tuesday, June 24, Morris Orange plays Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley at 5:30 p.m. and Yellow Medicine East at 7 p.m. Morris Black plays Minnewaska, again, at 5:30 p.m. and Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley at 7 p.m.
