Detroit Lakes native Mary A. Berg, 76, of Superior, Wis., passed away on Palm Sunday, March 16, 2008.
Mary Ann Stollenwerk was born the daughter of Joseph and Lillian Stollenwerk on Aug. 27, 1931 in Detroit Lakes. She was a graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. Mary attended Gustavus Adolphus College and received Bachelor of Arts degrees in English, speech and education in 1953. She earned a master's degree in reading education in 1977 from the University of Wisconsin, Superior (UWS).
As an educator, Mary taught grade school and finished her teaching career as a faculty member at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) and as an adjunct professor at UWS. She was married to Rev. Dr. Donald Berg in 1951.
Mary was a partner in ministry with Don at Immanuel Lutheran in Portland, Ore., the First Lutheran Churches in Westboro, Prentice and Ogema, Wis., Bethel Lutheran in Menominee, Mich., Pilgrim Lutheran in Superior, Wis., and the English-speaking congregation in Ngaoundere, Cameroon, Africa. She was involved at the ELCA Synod level with Global Missions and Lutheran Church Women.
Mary is survived by her beloved husband Donald; sister Joanne; brother James; sons Scott (CeCe), Geoff (Becky) and Jonathon (Ellie); daughters Laurie, Lynnae (Ron), Kristen (Floyd) and foster daughter Chiu Wang; as well as nine grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her parents and a sister, Carol.
A service celebrating the continuing promise of Easter, followed by a reception honoring Mary's life and homecoming will be held at 11 a.m. on Easter Monday, March 24, in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 820 Belknap St., Superior, Wis. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. in the Chapel. Arrangements are being provided by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.
Mary asked that any memorials be sent to the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) Foundation, American Bible Society or Pilgrim Lutheran Church.
