Marie Sunquist

Marie C. Sunquist, age 84 of Cumberland, Wis., died on Oct. 2, 2009 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wis.

Marie Sunquist was born Nov. 21, 1924 in Minneapolis to Myrtle and Clifford Johnson. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1942.

Marie was proud of her contributions during WWII as a Rosie the Riveter Inspector on B-52s for Northwest Airlines in Minneapolis. She also worked in Detroit, Mich. and Baltimore, Md.

Marie met and fell in love with Herb Sunquist during roller skating and dancing dates. They married on June 28, 1945. They lived in Morris with their three children Sandra, Pamela and Douglas. The family moved to Cumberland, Wis. in 1960. Herb passed away in 1986 and her son Douglas passed away in 1987.

Marie loved music and dedicated 60 years to singing in church choirs. In Morris, the family was very active in First Lutheran Church from 1945-1960.

Marie loved to bake Norwegian treats, create hand painted rosemaling and folk art items. Her Morris friends remember her as an amazing seamstress, making most of her daughters' clothing as they grew.

Marie is survived by her daughters, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren: Sandra (Bob) Stanton of Eau Claire and their children and grandchildren, Dawn (Jeff) Wurst, Emily and Eric; Jennifer (Dave) Daniel and Marin, John and Drew; Heidi (Noel) Hoilien, Caleb, Elliot, Maya and Jesse. Pamela (Mike, deceased) Stuttgen of River Falls, and her children and grandchildren Stacy (Jason) Triplat and her son Adam, Chad Stuttgen, his friend Amy and his daughter Autumn, Nicole (Fred) Griesbach. Her sisters Lois (Chuck) Seldon, Sonja (Roberto) Bari, brother Chuck (Alice) Christiansen, sisters-in-law Harriet Ricke, brother-in-law Ken Sunquist and numerous nieces and nephews.

Greeting her in Heaven are her husband, Herb, son Douglas, son-in-law Mike Stuttgen, grandparents, Gunda and Marius Heglie, her parents, five siblings Clifford Christiansen, Donald Christiansen, Phyllis Carlin,Carol Mostad,and DiAnn Dougherty; brothers-in-law Ray Dougherty and Wayne Ricke, her Aunt Alice Heglie, her mother-in-law and father-in law, Inez and Luther Sunquist, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Melvin and Kate Sunquist, and sister-in-law Mabel Sunquist.

A memorial service for Mabel Sunquist will be held at 11:00 Saturday, Oct. 10 at First Lutheran Church, 1180 8th Ave., Cumberland. Visitation is Friday, Oct. 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home, 1245 First Ave, Cumberland, and one hour prior to the service.
