Legion Post 29 trumps Wheaton, again

Toby Sayles makes contact in the third inning against Wheaton last Thursday, July 3 in Morris.

Morris Legion Post 29 held its own against Wheaton for the second time this season as they trumped the Bandits 5-2 on Thursday, July 3 in Morris.

Scoreless through 2.5 innings, Morris jumped on the board first with Noah Grove scoring on a Toby Sayles sacrifice fly to right field. Wheaton didn’t waste any time tying up the game in the fourth, but Morris added a run in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 2-1.

The Two-Niners put up a three-spot in the fifth to take a healthy 4-1 lead. Sayles reached on a walk, then took second and third on back-to-back passed balls to get into scoring position. Then two outs later, Ryan Dietz reached via walk to bring up Bryce Jergenson who knocked them both in on a double hit to deep left field.

Each team added a run in the sixth, but Wheaton got no closer as Morris' pitcher Jergenson finished out the seventh inning with two strikeouts.

Next game for the Two-Niners is a doubleheader against Clinton in Chokio Tuesday, July 8.
