Johnson and Gausman capture B-B-E titles

The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta Tiger wrestling team traveled to Belgrade for a pre-turkey day wrestling tournament on Nov. 28. The Tigers proved they were ready to compete in the 2013-2014 season.
As a team, the Tigers couldn’t keep pace with the eventual champion Willmar at 194 points, but walked away with a solid second place finish with 164 points. Host Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa finished third with 125 points.
Eleven Tigers placed in the tournament with five wrestlers in the championship matches and two claiming championships. Senior Dillan Johnson captured the 145 pound title and Junior Alec Gausman captured the 220 pound title.
Johnson is the Tiger’s lone returning state entrant from last year and was the No. 1
seed at 145 pounds. He received a bye in the first round and then pinned Jonah Voss of B-B-E in 1:12. In the championship, he pinned Clem Geralds of Holdingford in 5:33 to claim the title.
Gausman was the number three seed and started his title run with a fall over Hayden Knip of Bonanza Valley (a team made up of extra wrestlers from other teams) in :42 seconds. In the semi-finals, he defeated the number two seed Jalen Cabrera of Willmar by a fall in 1:10. In the finals, he trailed the Matt Hennes of Bonanza Valley into the third period, but was able to turn him over and pin at the 5:02 mark for the win and the title.
Travis Ostby took second place with a loss in the 138 pound championships to Austin Miley of Willmar by the score of 14-4. Ostby pinned Colby Schramel of B-B-E in the semi-finals in 4:42.
Myles Smith lost in the 152 pounds finals on a last second takedown by the No. 1 seed Travis Deegan of Willmar. The final score was 6-5. Smith pinned his way into the finals with wins over Cole Gau of Bonanza Valley in 3:05 and Alex Schramel of B-B-E in 1:58.
In the 285 pound weight class, Jacob Sperr pinned his way into the championship match with a fall over James Gaida of Bonanza Valley in :52 seconds and a huge upset fall over the number one seed Derrick Pillatzki of Ortonville in 2:17. In the finals, Sperr was defeated by Leon Richards of Willmar by fall in 1:43.
Matt Munsterman placed third in the 113-weight class with a win over Tristan Eastman of Ortonville and was 3-1 on the day.
In the 120-pound weight class, Mitch Ascheman went 3-1 and placed third with a win over Andrew Zachman of Holdingford.
Phillip Messner placed third at 132 pounds with a fall over Elijah Cloos of Ortonville at 2:43. Messner went 3-1 on the day.
Jerid Berning went 2-1 at 160 pounds, good for third, with a fall over Steven Mady of B-B-E in 4:11.
Another third place finisher, Danny Tracy went 1-1 at 182 pounds with a fall over Harry Henley of Browerville at 1:34.
Aaron Nelson finished fourth at 195 pounds with a loss to Darius O’Neil of Bonanza Valley and went 1-2 on the day.
Christian Athey (106 pounds), Jared Rohloff (126), and Steven Kohel (170) went 0-2 on the mat and did not place.
The Tigers finished second as a team with 164 points. Willmar took home the title with 194. The point totals were as follows:

The Tigers will host a home dual match against Melrose-Sauk Centre at the Hancock gym on Tuesday, December 3rd at 7:00. JV will wrestle at 6:00.
