Irene Koosmann

Irene Koosmann, age 89, of Glenwood, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011, at Glenwood Village Care Center, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 12, at Glenwood Lutheran Church, with Rev. Krista Lee officiating. Interment was in Glenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.

Irene Ida Sophia Schuerman, daughter of Ernest F. and Elfrieda (Platow) Schuerman, was on July 11, 1921 at home on a farm near Holloway. She attended St. John's Lutheran Church in Moyer Township and was a graduate of Holloway High School. Irene was united in marriage to Werner John Koosmann on July 23, 1939 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Holloway. They made their home on a farm north of Morris for many years. In 1964, they moved to Glenwood, where Irene has made her home ever since.

Irene loved to cook and to crochet, especially afghans. The coffee pot was always on and there was always something to eat for anyone who stopped to visit. All her children and grandchildren have afghans that she crocheted for them. Each of the great grandchildren received smaller white afghans as newborn babies to be used at their baptisms. Irene had many friends, was loved by many, and will be greatly missed. She received the perfect gift on Mother's Day to be called home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and we can only rejoice with her.

Irene is survived by her three children: Karen (James) Frank of Naples, Fla., Joyce (Jere) Ettesvold of Cyrus, and Victor (Janet) Koosmann of Bemidji; six grandchildren: Stephanie (Peter Eckart) Frank, James (Tiffany) Frank Jr., John Ettesvold, Jennifer (Wes) Ettesvold Monty, Kimberly Koosmann Ickler, Dustin Koosmann; 10 great-grandchildren: Aaron and Isaiah Eckart-Frank, Patrick, Connor and Gavin Frank, Wesley and Avery Monty, Andreya and Amaya Ickler, and Addison Koosmann.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Werner, in 1997; her father and step-mother, Ernest and Mabel (Ehrp) Schuerman; her mother and step-father, Elfrieda and Albert Bahl; and her sister, Iris Schuerman Kolling.

Casketbearers were Irene's grandchildren and their spouses. Rene Brown served as organist and Diane DeJong was the soloist.
