Howard Walker

Howard Clinton Walker, age 91 of Baldwin, Wis., passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009. He was born the son of Robert Loa and Elma Jane (Clark) Walker on June 30, 1918 in Morris. He attended District 70 School in Morris Township and then Morris High School. In 1941, he was inducted into the National Guard, and then into the US Army, proudly serving in WWII. Howard became a weapons instructor at Ft. Benning, Ga., and he was honorably discharged in 1945. Howard and Edna Gillespie were united in marriage on Sept. 4, 1942. They were blessed with seven children. Howard spent most of his working life in construction. When he returned from WWII, he became a foreman at George Mattson in the Morris area, but later moved his family to the Twin Cities where he became a project superintendent at Bor-Son Construction in Minneapolis, where he worked for 35 years. In 1971, Howard and Edna moved to Baldwin, Wis., and Howard officially retired in 1986. His passions included horse racing, hunting, fishing, dancing and playing cards. He raised Standard bred horses and participated in harness racing throughout the United States and Canada as a member of the Harness Racing Association. He hunted both big and small game his entire life. He also fished whenever he could, and for over 20 years, he took annual fishing trips to Lynn Lake, Manitoba. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing sports. Howard was an exceptional wood-worker, creating furniture and crafts, taking great joy in giving them to family and friends. Howard was also an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by his son, Howard Jr., Sisters Laura McCollar and Ada Marquardt, and Brothers Lyle Walker and Robert Walker. Howard will be remembered by his wife of 67 years, Edna; his children: Robert Walker (Annette) of Roseville, Judith Jessup (David) of Stillwater, Roger Walker of Hastings, Patrick Walker (Vivian) of Hastings, Sherry Walker (Vern Gerhardt) of Baldwin, Wis., and Todd Walker (Susan) of Baldwin, Wis.; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Hazel Christiansen of Madras, Ore. and sister-in-law, Haroldine Walker of Morris.

Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 24 at 11 a.m. at First Reformed Church, 1120 11th Ave., Baldwin. Interment is in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. O'Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin is in charge of arrangements.
