Helen Stenson

Funeral services for Helen Stenson of Hancock was held Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock. Rev. Julius Miller will be officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

Helen Louise Sloneker, daughter of William and Alma (Weilder) Sloneker, was born April 10, 1919 in Horton Township in Stevens County, where she grew up and began her schooling at Country School District #16 through the 8th grade. For the next four years, Helen continued her education at West Central School of Agriculture in Morris, where she met her future husband. While Juel was serving in the Army, in Portsmouth, N.H., Helen went to visit him. They were married on April 10, 1942 by the Justice of the Peace in Portsmouth, N.H. Helen worked for a defense contractor until the fall of 1944, when they returned to Minnesota. They resided in Watson and Wegdahl until they moved to Hancock in 1948. Helen assisted her husband and brother, Merrill, operate the Sloneker & Stenson grocery store. Helen and Esther Sloneker opened a bakery within the grocery store until they retired. After retirement, the couple traveled the U.S. and maintained a winter home in Yuma, Ariz. for 13 years. In 2002, Helen was moved to Glenwood Retirement Village, where she lived until the time of her death.

In 1948, Helen became a member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock. She was active with the Ladies Aid, Willing Workers, and a member of the Degree of Honor Association.

Helen passed away with her family by her side on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood. Helen was 91 years old.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years: Juel Stenson of Morris; two children: Gary (Judy) Stenson of Arvada, Colo. and Diane (Al) Herwitz of Littleton, Colo.; one granddaughter: Terri (Steve) Goodhue of Denver, Colo.; two great-grandchildren: Sara Jo Goodhue and Sydney Jae Goodhue of Denver, Colo.; one sister: Velma Hansen of Albertville and one brother: Leon (Pat) Sloneker of Cyrus. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother: Merrill Sloneker, one sister-in-law, Esther Sloneker and one brother-in-law, Murray Hansen.

Serving as pallbearers for the service were: William "Bill" Sloneker, Lee Sloneker, Perry Sloneker, David Sloneker, Al Herwitz and Alvin Smith. Honorary pallbearers were: Pat Swanson, Dennis Jepma, Jeff Kisgen and Jim Elsey. Sandy Pahl served as organist for the service with Lee and Perry Sloneker providing special music. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris was in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that memorials be given to the Glenwood Retirement Village (Rainbow Center) in Glenwood or Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Hancock.
