Hancock girls take 2nd in Alex tourney
The Hancock varsity girls' basketball team participated in the annual Alexandria tournament immediately following the regular summer schedule. Alexandria was the No. 1 seed, Sauk Centre I was the No. 2 seed, Sauk Centre II was the No. 3 seed, and Hancock was the No. 4 seed. As during the regular summer schedule, each team played the best two-out-of-three, 15 minute games with all subs entering the game every five minutes.
In the opening round of action, the Owls defeated Melrose 2-0 with scores of 25-18 and 26-20. The girls played outstanding defense in this game and caused a lot of havoc with the full court press.
In the semi-final round, the Owls were matched up against the Alexandria Cardinals. The first game was a barn burner as Hancock came from behind and defeated the Cardinals 25-24. The Owls took excellent care of the basketball in the final minute to seal the deal.
In the next game, Alexandria took a convincing 11-1 lead, but the Lady Owls came storming back to win 24-13 and move into the finals. The girls were extremely patient on offense and converted on free-throws down the stretch.
In the finals, Hancock was matched up against Sauk Centre (both I and II). The team knew that this was going to be tough as it was the third game of the night and Sauk Centre I and II opted not to play each other in the semi-finals; therefore, they were well-rested for this championship game. The Lady Owls fought hard in the first game and lost 24-21. It was raining 3-pointers in the second game for the Mainstreeters as they defeated the Owls 26-18. Sauk Centre is coming off their first-ever state tournament appearance and returns their entire starting lineup.
"I was very pleased with the performance of all of the Lady Owls," said coach Jodi Holleman. "They battled hard the entire night and won all the heart, hustle, and muscle points! Great job girls!"
