Early triple leads to Morris VFW win

Morris VFW's five-run first inning built an early lead that helped bring home a 10-5 win over Benson VFW on Friday, June 13 at Chizek Field in Morris.

Morris scored in the first on an RBI triple by Trent Marty, a steal home by Marty, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Philip Anderson.

Robert Rohloff went a perfect 2-2 at the plate, doubling in the fifth and singling in the sixth inning.

Brady Jergenson was a workhorse on the mound. Jergenson pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out 13.

Benson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Conner Staton singled before Brett Selier doubled, scoring Staton. Benson VFW pushed the second run across when Selier scored on an error.

After posting one run in the fourth, Morris, again, scored one in the fifth. In the fourth, Morris scored on an RBI single by Jergenson, plating Sean Amundson.

Benson scored three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Morris deficit to one when a passed ball, a sacrifice fly by Nick Miller, and an error gave Benson VFW life. Jergenson finally ended the Benson's fifth inning rally, taking Max McDonald via strikeout.

Morris VFW increased its lead to 10-5 with three runs in the sixth. Rohloff kicked things off with a single, bringing home Jergenson and Toby Sayles. That was followed up by Denner Dougherty's RBI single that scored Rohloff to claim the victory.

Morris VFW's next game is Tuesday, June 17 in Alexandria against the Alex 15's.
